An electronic target tells you where the shot landed. A trace system can show part of what happened before and after it. Put the two together and a coach can see far more than a score alone.
That extra detail is useful until it becomes the session.
Athletes can quickly find themselves studying every movement, comparing perfect-looking traces, and trying to correct several numbers at once. The next shot then begins with a head full of instructions. The data has described the problem but made execution harder.
The better approach is to use EST and SCATT evidence to choose one focus for the next block of shooting.
Begin with the session question
Do not open the trace screen and ask, “What is wrong?” Start with the behaviour being trained.
Useful questions include:
- Is the athlete arriving in the aiming area with a repeatable approach?
- Does trigger pressure continue while the hold is acceptable?
- Are longer holds ending in an appropriate lower or a forced shot?
- Does the position change after trigger release?
- Is a technical change still present when the athlete stops thinking about it consciously?
The question determines which part of the trace matters. Without it, every visible difference competes for attention.
Understand what each system contributes
The electronic target provides the official outcome: shot value, location, timing, and series pattern, depending on the system and export available.
SCATT or another trace system estimates movement and timing around the shot. It can help the coach examine the approach, hold pattern, trace speed, aiming-point movement, trigger phase, and follow-through. The exact measures and their interpretation vary by discipline, setup, calibration, and device.
Neither system sees the whole athlete. A trace cannot tell you exactly what the athlete saw, felt, or intended. It does not replace observation, conversation, equipment checks, or knowledge of the training plan.
Treat the trace as evidence, not a verdict.
Check setup before interpreting performance
A loose sensor, changed mounting position, poor calibration, altered target distance, unstable cable, or inconsistent software setting can create an apparent performance change.
Before comparing traces:
- Confirm the device is mounted securely and consistently.
- Check calibration and target dimensions.
- Record any change in firearm, sights, position, or distance.
- Confirm the athlete completed the intended preparation.
- Use comparable shots from the same discipline and session type.
If the picture suddenly looks very different while the athlete reports no change and the target result is stable, check the setup before rebuilding the technique.
Select representative shots
Reviewing every shot gives unusual events too much attention and takes the athlete away from training.
Choose a small, purposeful sample:
- One shot the athlete considered good.
- One shot they considered poor.
- One shot that felt normal.
- If relevant, one late-session shot or one shot under pressure.
Ask the athlete to describe each shot before showing the trace. Then compare their account with the evidence.
The goal is not to prove that the graph is right and the athlete is wrong. It is to help the athlete connect sensation, decision, and outcome.
Read the trace in sequence
A trace becomes easier to understand when it is reviewed in the order the shot occurred.
Approach
Look at how the aim enters the working area. Is the direction broadly repeatable? Does the athlete arrive with enough control to continue the shot, or do they spend the first part of the hold repairing the approach?
Do not chase a perfectly straight line. The practical question is whether the approach supports the athlete's normal shot process.
Hold
Examine the movement once the athlete is in the working area. Consider the shape, speed, duration, and whether the hold changes as the shot continues.
A smaller trace is not automatically a better shot. An athlete may produce a compact hold while hesitating on the trigger. Another may accept a slightly wider but predictable movement and execute confidently.
Trigger phase
Look for what happens as the shot is released. Does movement change sharply? Does the trace suggest a late correction or interruption? Is the timing consistent with the athlete's account?
Avoid claiming the trace reveals trigger technique with certainty. Use it alongside observation and the athlete's description.
Follow-through
Review the movement immediately after release. A repeated change in direction or position may be worth investigating, especially when it matches target pattern and coach observation.
One unusual follow-through is not a diagnosis. Look for repetition.
Connect movement to the target
The trace and shot location should be interpreted together.
If similar trace behaviour repeatedly accompanies shots in the same area, the relationship may deserve a test. If the trace changes but shot location does not, the difference may be unimportant to the current goal. If shot location changes without an obvious trace difference, consider position, sight alignment, ammunition, equipment, or factors the sensor does not capture.
Avoid selecting only examples that support the coach's first explanation. Look deliberately for shots that challenge it.
Choose one change for the next block
Finish the review with one instruction the athlete can use immediately.
Examples:
- Begin trigger pressure as the approach settles rather than waiting for a perfect hold.
- Lower when the hold passes the agreed time instead of attempting a late rescue.
- Keep the preparation rhythm unchanged for the next ten shots.
- Allow the normal movement and judge the shot by trigger continuity.
The instruction should describe an action, not a graph. “Reduce trace length by 12 percent” may be measurable, but it is rarely a useful cue on the firing point.
Shoot another short block, then review whether the change appeared in the process, the trace, and the target. If it did not, clarify the task before adding another instruction.
Use data at planned moments
Continuous feedback can make the athlete dependent on the screen. Decide when data will be reviewed before the session begins.
A practical structure is:
- Shoot a baseline block without interruption.
- Ask for the athlete's account.
- Review a small trace sample.
- Agree on one focus.
- Shoot a second block with minimal feedback.
- Compare the blocks and decide what carries forward.
For retention, include later shots without live trace feedback. A change that only exists while the athlete watches the graph has not yet become dependable.
Avoid the common traps
Do not treat model traces from another athlete as a shape everyone must copy. Technique, discipline, body structure, equipment, and experience influence the picture.
Do not compare unlike sessions as though the conditions were identical.
Do not let one poor shot dominate the review.
Do not give the athlete three technical corrections because the software displays three measures.
Do not mistake precision for certainty. A number shown to two decimal places can still be affected by setup, calibration, and interpretation.
Do not keep analysing after the coaching decision is clear.
Build the athlete's own observation
Trace tools are most valuable when they improve what the athlete can recognize without them.
Over time, ask the athlete to predict what the trace will show. Can they identify a delayed trigger phase? Can they recognize when a long hold should have ended in a lower? Can they distinguish a shot that looked untidy but followed the intended process from one that felt controlled but contained hesitation?
When their account becomes more accurate, use the screen less often. The goal is not permanent dependence on analysis. It is better self-coaching during the moments when no screen should matter.
Leave the session with a decision
EST and SCATT systems can reveal patterns that the target alone cannot show. Their value, however, is not the amount of data they produce. It is the quality of the next training decision.
Start with one question. Review a few representative shots. Connect the trace with the target, the coach's observation, and the athlete's experience. Then choose one action and return to shooting.
If the athlete leaves the screen knowing exactly what to practise next, the analysis has done enough.
